BGP Communities

A BGP community consists of routes that share a common attribute. A BGP community specifies a destination grouped into a logical unit to make it easier to apply routing policies. By performing global configurations for a community of routes, you reduce the amount of tasks, time, CPU work, and memory needed to set parameters for each route. Once you have established which routes you want to include in your community, you create a community list to which you add the IP addresses of the desired routes.

To Create a Community List

  1. Enter the necessary information:

Community List ID: A value that identifies the community list that contains the list of remote networks.

Permit: Denies or permits BGP traffic for routers with entries in the community list.

Comm Type: This section specifies the community parameters:

as: Select this option if the NetScreen device will not advertise the listed network destinations to other autonomous systems.

no advertise: Select this option if the NetScreen device will not advertise the listed network destinations to any peer devices.

no-export: Select this option if the NetScreen device will not advertise the listed network destinations to EBGP peers, except sub-autonomous systems within the confederation.

no-export-subconfed: Select this option if the NetScreen device will not advertise the listed network destinations to any peer devices grouped in a confederation.

AS number: Enter the ID number of the AS.

final two octets: Enter the ID number of the community value.

  1. Click Add in the Action column.

The network is added to the list.

To Remove a Route from a Community

  1. Click Remove in the Action column of the route that you want to delete.

A system message prompts you to confirm the removal.

  1. Click OK to confirm the removal, or Cancel to cancel it.
