The DNS cache table allows you to create an alias for an external host and to access that host from the NetScreen device. It also allows you to view current table entries as they occur.
Note: The DNS cache table is local to the device, and functions only as a proxy for the actual DNS server. Consequently, other network nodes cannot query the listed names using the device.
Use the List ... Cache Table dropdown to specify the table entry type. You can specify any of the following entry types:
Static entries are entries that you define. The device does not generate these entries spontaneously.
Dynamic entries are generated by the device spontaneously, representing DNS inquiries made by the device itself.
Unresolved entries represent unsuccessful attempts by the device to resolve DNS queries sent to the DNS server.
The elements of the DNS cache table are as follows:
Host Name: Specifies a host name with which to represents a host device.
IP: Specifies the IP address of the host device. For an unresolved entry, Last IP Specifies the IP address of the last host device that sent an unsuccessful DNS request.
Each table entry allows you to reach the specified host from the device using the Host Name value. For example, a DNS table entry might contain an entry named "acme" with an IP address of 2.2.2.25. This entry allows you to reach the host from the device by using the Host Name value as the identifier. (For example, you could reach the device with the CLI command ping acme.)
