Track IP Configuration for an Interface

Layer 3 path monitoring, or IP tracking, sends ping requests to monitor up to four IP addresses at user-determined intervals and then checks to see if the targets respond. If the targets do not respond, the device can deactivate the routes associated with the interface, even if the physical link is still active.

Note: You can configure the device so that the combined weights from a failed tracked IP object, failed security zones, and failed interfaces are required for the monitor failure threshold to be exceeded. Alternatively, you can set the weight of any one of these monitored objects so that its failure alone exceeds the monitor failure threshold.

To Configure a Tracked IP Address

  1. Select either Static or Dynamic IP tracking.

Track IP: Enter the IP address for the new Track IP entry.

Weight: Enter a weight from 1 to 255 (the default is 1). By applying a weight, or a value, to a tracked IP address, you can adjust the importance of connectivity to that address in relation to reaching other tracked addresses. You can assign greater weights to relatively more important addresses, and lesser weights to relatively less important addresses. The assigned weights come into play when the failure threshold for a Track IP entry is reached. For example, failure of a tracked IP address with a weight of 10 brings the interface closer to an IP tracking failure than would the failure of a tracked IP  address with a weight of 1.

Interval: Enter a time interval to occur between ping requests. You can set an interval between 1 and 200 seconds.

Threshold: Enter a threshold number from 1 to 200 (the default value is 3).The threshold represents the number of consecutive failures to elicit a ping response from a specific IP address required to be considered a failed attempt. Not exceeding the threshold indicates an acceptable level of connectivity with that address; exceeding it indicates an unacceptable level.

Track IP Table

The Track IP table lists all configured tracked IP addresses and the following information about each one:

IP Address: Identifies the tracked IP address.

Interval (sec): Indicates the interval of time between ping requests.

Threshold: Indicates the number of consecutive failures to elicit a ping response from a specific IP address required to be considered a failed attempt.

Interface: Identifies the interface from which the ping request is sent.

Weight: Indicates the weight of the IP address.

Method: Indicates that the device uses ping requests to poll the remote device.

Configure: Click Edit to modify the existing Track IP entry or click Remove to delete it from the system.
