Administrator Configuration

The factory default admin name and password for your NetScreen device are "netscreen", "netscreen". We recommend that you change the admin name and password when you first start up and configure your NetScreen device.

To Create an Administrator

  1. Enter the login name for the administrator in the AdministratorName field.

  1. Enter the new password in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.

Note: Passwords must be 1 to 31 characters in length.

  1. Select the type of privileges you want the administrator to have.

Read-Write: Gives the administrator the ability to configure and monitor the device.

Read-Only: Gives the administrator the ability to monitor the device and perform basic troubleshooting such as pinging.

SSH Password Authentication: When you uncheck this option for an administrator, and SSH is enabled, the admin can only manage the device using the PKA authentication method. This option applies to both SSHv1 and SSHv2.

Note: The SSH Password Authentication feature only applies to management sessions initiated from SSH clients and do not affect management sessions originating from the serial console, Telnet, or Web.

  1. Click OK to save the configuration.

To Modify the User Name and Password of an Existing Administrator

  1. Enter the new login name for the administrator in the Name field.

At this point, you can actually use the new user name with the old password. If you want to change the password, proceed to step 2.

  1. Enter the new password in the New Password and Confirm New Password fields.

Note: Passwords must be 1 to 31 characters in length.

  1. Click OK to save your changes.

From now on, use the new admin name and password.

Note: Any change to the configuration of the device gets logged with the name of the administrator who made the change, the IP address from which it was made, and the time at which it was made (see the Event Log under Reports).
